Approximately 130 educators participated in the 2022 Malaysian Teachers’ Teaching Workshop from June 4 to June 6. The workshop was jointly organized by the Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Malaysia, the Organization of Taiwan Education and Culture Malaysia, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), the Malaysian Conforming Secondary Schools Principals Council, the Chinese Language Section of the State Education Department in Malaysia, the Secondary School Chinese Language Teachers Association in Selangor, Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, Chung Hua University, and Soochow University.
Dr. Mah Hang Soon, Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Education, was a distinguished guest at the opening ceremony. In his remarks, he affirmed the significance of the workshop’s enriching the educators with the fusion of traditional poems and modern teaching skills. He praised the organizers for putting great efforts into promoting education and cultural cooperation and exchange.
Ms. Charlin Chang, the Director of the Education Division of TECO then outlined how Taiwan has been supporting teachers in their role of maintaining humanity, assisting them to stay up-to-date with the latest technology for teaching and international education in this era of ongoing technological development. She told the workshop participants that she looked forward to more international education links being set up between schools in Taiwan and schools in Malaysia. She also thanked the organizers and co-organizers for holding teachers’ workshops that provide a platform for idea exchanges and professional teaching skills enhancement for many years.
Professor Dr. Ewe Hong Tat, the president of UTAR, said that teachers act as a vital guide for students, not only delivering knowledge but also nurturing good human beings. The traditional Chinese stories and folk tales play an important role in educating students and instilling good moral values which are indeed required in daily life. Mr. Beh Chew Nam, Executive Director of the Organization of Taiwan Education and Culture, Malaysia explained that the organization focused on facilitating cooperation between Taiwan and Malaysia, enhancing teachers’ teaching skills, and giving teachers a deeper understanding of the Chinese cultural spirit, so that they can encourage more students to appreciate the beauty of the Chinese language and culture.
The workshop topics included innovative teaching, traditional poetry, Chinese cultural etiquette, the beliefs of Confucianism and Taoism, and teachers’ counseling. Ms. Charlin Chang and Ms. Alice Chen from TECO Education Division provided the workshop participants with information about the International Exchange Window (IEW), an online platform which schools in Malaysia can use to help them find a suitable school in Taiwan to be a partner to engage with in international exchanges.
