Title: The Evolution of Chaocuo Waldorf School
The teachers and students of Chaocuo Waldorf School are deeply impressed and appreciative of Taiwan's support for public Waldorf education. This support underscores the government's unwavering commitment to education. Established in 2011, Chaocuo Waldorf School has now completed more than a decade of remarkable progress, reaching a stage of localization where 95% of its students come from Yunlin County. This remarkable statistic underscores the recognition of the school's educational effectiveness within the local community, potentially drawing more aspiring families to Yunlin and contributing to the town's growth through quality education.
Looking back at Chaocuo's history, the school was founded in September 1975. However, it was in 2011 that the school embarked on a transformative journey to introduce Waldorf education. This educational approach was inspired by the pioneering Waldorf school founded in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1919. Notably, the Stuttgart school, established by Emil Molt, the owner of the Waldorf-Astoria cigarette factory, was a philanthropic institution designed for the children of factory employees. In contrast, Chaocuo's initiative was driven by the forward-thinking Yunlin County Government. With the guidance of educational professionals, Chaocuo was chosen to adopt the principles of Waldorf education, with Anthroposophy as its guiding philosophy. The entire teaching staff shares a common understanding of Anthroposophy and has willingly invested at least three years in training at Cixinxin Waldorf School in Yilan. Together, they have diligently worked towards establishing a unified educational philosophy. The true treasure of Waldorf education lies in its teachers—individuals fully committed to the principles of Anthroposophy, who actively contribute to the development of a healthy and joyful educational community in Yunlin County.
1. Philosophy
Chaocuo Waldorf Experimental Elementary School, in collaboration with private non-profit Waldorf education organizations, is guided by the principles of Anthroposophy. Since 2011, with government support and adhering to Waldorf education principles, the school has been granted the freedom to nurture a balanced and holistic approach to education. Its mission is to inspire the comprehensive development of children in terms of will, emotion, and cognition, empowering them to become self-determined individuals equipped with life skills and a deep love for learning. The ultimate aim is to foster internally free individuals who can define their own goals, self-regulate their lives, and cultivate a world perspective rooted in the common good. Some teachers and parents have voluntarily undertaken a three-year training program at Cixinxin Waldorf School, earning significant recognition from parents for their enthusiastic contributions. Children grow up in a warm and authentic atmosphere at Chaocuo, naturally admiring their teachers. The extensive animal and plant farms provide a unique environment for children to learn respect for life and internalize gratitude. Parents are also actively engaged in campus activities and show a keen interest in the Waldorf curriculum.
2. School Overview
Since 2011, our teachers, administrators, and parents have accumulated extensive experience in Waldorf education and anthroposophical studies. With the support of Yilan Cixinxin Waldorf Experimental High School and the Anthroposophical Education Foundation, our faculty has steadily built a strong foundation in anthroposophical studies and Waldorf education. In 2015, following a review by the Ministry of Education, Chaocuo adopted the educational goals of global Waldorf schools dedicated to practicing universal values as its curriculum guideline. This strategic move has allowed the school to focus on advancing Waldorf experimental education.
Driven by a spirit of dedication, the school actively contributes to educational reform, facilitating the introduction of Waldorf education to parents and mainstream teachers. This effort positively impacts Taiwanese home education, social education, and the professional development of educators. Chaocuo also operates an affiliated kindergarten that adheres to anthroposophical principles and embraces the rhythms of Waldorf education. Currently, the kindergarten serves mixed-age children up to six years old, with a full class size of 30 children. From kindergarten to high school, each grade level has one class. In collaboration with Yunlin County's Gukeng Waldorf Experimental High School (located in the mountainous area), the primary and high school sections offer additional high school classes in Chaocuo.
