Dharma Master Cheng Yen, the founder of Tzu Chi University, says, “Education is the work of purifying human hearts and minds. If carried out well, education is a source of hope, as well as a stabilizing force in society.

Tzu Chi has four missions: Charity, Medicine, Education, and Culture. It is the wish of all Tzu Chi members to carry out charitable work around the world, make medical care widely available, provide comprehensive education, and promote humanitarian culture. To carry out its ideals for a humanistic education, Tzu Chi first established the College of Nursing (which developed into Tzu Chi College of Technology) and later the Tzu Chi College of Medicine (which developed into Tzu Chi University). Because Tzu Chi believes that education needs to start from young, so that children can set down good roots from a young age, Tzu Chi future established a primary and secondary school.

On July 11, 1999, Tzu Chi’s primary and secondary schools held their groundbreaking ceremony together. Despite the great trials from the Taiwan Quake on September 21, 1999, the Tzu Chi Elementary School and Tzu Chi Senior High School still achieved their goal of opening in September of 2000, thereby completing Tzu Chi’s Complete Education System, providing education from kindergarten up to graduate school.

Objectives of the school:
1. Complete character education: building moral integrity and inspire a sense of conscience, inner goodness, correct views and understanding.
2. Comprehensive education: emphasis on both skill sets and character; instilling the concept that one succeeds by helping others succeed.
3. Daily living education: built through discipline with love and the formation of precepts as rules.
4. Humanistic education: nurturing the spirit of love characterized by loving kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity; instilling the virtues of sincerity, integrity, trustworthiness, and honesty.
5. Broad outlook education: nurturing broad vision and outlook that engenders the commitment to purifying the hearts of humanity and building a peaceful society.

Dharma Master Cheng Yen said, “Elementary education should build up a solid foundation regarding students’ basic living habits. Secondary education should guide students to recognize the proper direction in life. Tertiary education should teach students to understand their responsibilities and life mission.” Thus, Tzu Chi Senior High School not only stresses the development of knowledge and skills, but also the education of daily living and humanities. We strive to nurture healthy and happy students who have a firm basis in ethics and character.

Multiple-Intelligence Learning
1. There are 30-40 students in each class. Teachers and students organize different study groups to encourage students to research special topics and be creative, thus enhancing students’ learning of science, information technology, astronomy, language, art, etc.
2. Teaching Jing Si Aphorisms: Jing Si Aphorisms are utilized in teaching to nurture in students the spirit of great love and gratitude. Besides, students are encouraged to watch Da Ai TV’s “Life Wisdom” program every day to learn from Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s teachings.
3. English in the curriculum: There are English conversation classes and English listening classes taught by teachers who are native speakers. An English camp is held in summer every year. The curriculum is comprehensive and fun. Students can also sign up for the English reading group. Certificates will be issued.
4. Experimental Classes for outstanding students: To nurture outstanding students, there are two experimental classes. One is the Science and Technology Experimental Class. The other is the Bilingual Experimental Class.

Daily Living Education
1. We teach students self-discipline, diligence, frugality, perseverance in the face of difficulties, and teach them to conserve natural resources and minimize carbon emissions, to eat a vegetarian diet, to line a simple life, and to donate money to help people in need.
2. Students learn to live a disciplined, tidy, and harmonious life with others in the dormitory.
3. Students who have made transgressions are encouraged to take part in volunteer service where they can learn the volunteer spirit of diligently helping others.
4. Each class has several students doing recycling work.

Humanistic Education
1. Classes on Tzu Chi’s spirit of humanity: Once a week students take courses that nurture the spirit of humanity, such as tea ceremony class, Jing Si Aphorism class, environmental protection classes, and service activities.
2. Volunteer services: The school provides volunteer training and issues “passports” to students who have successfully completed such training. Students can volunteer in hospitals, communities, or at the school’s clinic and counseling center. They can also serve as tutors, cleaning volunteers, work for the school’s newsletter, or do environmental work.
3. Humanistic activities: Contests for sign language and singing of Tzu Chi songs, Buddha Day ceremony, year-end blessing ceremony, overseas cultural exchange program, volunteer service planning and more are held regularly.
4. Mentoring: Commissioners and Tzu Cheng Faith Corps members are selected to act as Tzu Chi Moms and Dads for the students. They give love and care to the students.
