A Brief History of Chiayi City Pei-Shin Public Junior High School
Establishment:
In August, 1962, four classes of new students were recruited under the name of Pei-Shin Branch of Lan-Tang
Middle School. It was approved in a provincial order to establish an independent school on December 20th of
the same year, and Mr. Wen-Lin He was assigned as the first Principal.
Restructured to junior high school: In the academic year of 1968, national education was extended to a
nine-year system. The middle school was restructured to junior high school.
Principals in the past: The first Principal: Mr. Wen-Lin He; the second Principal: Mr. Rui-Ren He; the third
Principal: Mr. Qing-De Zhang; the fourth Principal: Mr. Ming-Xing Lu; the fifth Principal: Mr. Qing-Song Wu;
the sixth Principal: Mr. Ming-Li Huang; the seventh Principal: Mr. Shun-Ming Qiu; the eighth Principal: Mr. Ke-
Xun Hong, Mr. Jin-Long Zhang.

Construction of school buildings:
(1) The students for the first year of the establishment of the school were lectured at the facility in Shiuan Shin Elementary School.
(2) On November 16th, 1963, Zhong-Xiao Building was completed for course delivery.
(3) Between 1964 and 1967, Ren-Ai Building, school gate on Zhong-Xiao Road, reception room, and cement paving engineering in the campus were completed one after another.
(4) On the day of school anniversary celebration in 1968, a completion ceremony of “Zhong-Zheng Building” was held. It was named after praising integrity and meritorious deeds and invited Mr. Jie Huang for inscription. After that, the construction of Xin-Yi Building, He-Ping Building, and arts & crafts classroom were completed one after another.
(5) In order to cooperate with national policy in developing science education, the science hall “Ge-Zhi Building” was constructed and opened to use on the anniversary celebration day in 1972.
(6) New north wall and side gate were completed in April, 1983.
(7) Building of interdepartmental classrooms and large-scale with stairs were expanded, and they were completed for use in December, 1983.
(8) New student activity center was completed in May, 1996.
(9) New school gate on Bo-Dong Road and reception room were completed for use in March, 1999.
(10) The reconstruction works of the dedicated academic building was commenced in January, 2001; it was completed on December 15th, 2001.
(11) On November 2nd, 2002, the reconstruction works of Xin-Yi Building was commenced at the original site; it was completed on May 30th, 2003. After voting by all the students and teachers in the school, it was renamed “Hong-Xue Building”.
(12) Zi-Qiang Building and He-Ping Building were demolished in May, 2003 to construct Hong-Dao Building. It was completed for use in February, 2004.
Future expectation:
The beautiful campus, splendid school buildings, outstanding school gate, diligent school spirit, and good
reputation in Pei-Shin Public Junior High School are the performance of hard-working by teachers and students
from so many years. After understanding the history of school establishment, students shall focus on learning,
cherish school and its reputation, and continue to draw up even more beautiful vision for Pei-Shin Public
Junior High School.

School characteristics
In facing 2019 curriculum guidelines, science and technology is added to the original seven key course areas, turning it into eight key learning areas as well as the number of alternative learning sections is increased. Pei-Shin Public Junior High School plans courses of outdoor exploration, Jhuluo reconnaissance, good reading, and listening and speaking with foreign teachers as the alternative learning sessions for the students in the first year. The eighth learning section for the students in the first year includes fitness and service learning. These are the curriculum of the courses in the first year.
Character education:
Character education is very important for junior high school students because good character represents good attitude and competitiveness for the future while the attitude determines the future. Bilingual Character Camp is held in the beginning of summer vacation, and it is promoted by using junior high school students as little volunteers providing services to make the activity more meaningful.
Good reading is planned as curriculum, and students are guided to reflect good character through reading. The promotion of aesthetic education is to fulfill the cultivation of life education and further internalize it to external behavior. It is more effective than cramming education.
Science and technology:
Pei-Shin is a pilot school for the area of science and technology, possessing the most complete faculty and equipment in Chiayi City for the planning of courses related to science and technology in the future. Students are able to really enjoy technology-enhanced learning and even expand to teaching in different areas, using technological resource to change teaching. In the future, we expect to provide students more effective and diverse holistic learning in order to enhance learning effectiveness.
Reading education:
Pei-Shin Public Junior High School is the only junior high schools in Chiayi City that was awarded the National Advanced Reading Award by Ministry of Education. How the reading is valued in the school is presented through morning readings every Thursday, reading VIP, and one reading activity section every week held in order to create the reading atmosphere in the school. Reading makes the textbook learning more active, and students will be able to correspond to the comprehensive assessment program and the direction of academic examination through thinking.
Outdoor education:
We were awarded the gold medal of outdoor education performance “Fly 100” held by Ministry of Education. Currently, Ministry of Education emphasizes a lot on the outdoor education developed by schools. Pei-Shin Public Junior High School plans outdoor exploration for students from the first year to carry out multiple outdoor activities in the approach of a course. From preparation, exploration experience to silence for reflection, the course design for each stage is marvelous. In addition, the activities are planned and promoted step by step. Holland Lake Park is arranged for the students in the first year, Lulin Mountain for the students in the second year, and Jade mountain for the students in the third year. The reflection and feedback from the students participating in the activities are very moving.
International education:
In order to enhance international perspective among students, Pei-Shin Public Junior High School established Club of International Education and Exchange to participate in International Companions for Learning Program held by National Taiwan University in order to actively promote and participate in international exchange activities. Our students were awarded as the best delegates for Model United Nations for two years consecutively. Moreover, international volunteers from Canada visited our school to exchange and communicate with our students. City Government also subsidized the cost of one foreign teacher to carry out one section of English-speaking class every week for the students in the first year.
Gifted education:
Since 75 students passed talented and gifted assessment in 2015, we have more than 70 students passing the assessment every year. We have achieved outstanding performance in the math competition we participated in each year. Other than strengthen curriculum, our gifted education focuses on independent research to carry out relevant activities in order to bring out the potential of the talented and gifted students. From 2019, we cancelled the limitation of 30 students in the gifted class. This year, there are 68 students in the gifted class in the first year with two homeroom teachers.
Wind orchestra music promotion:
The wind orchestra class in our school has been awarded High Distinction Award for Indoor Wind Orchestra Music Junior High School Group A at the National Music Competition for ten years consecutively. Our wind orchestra club was also awarded The First Prize of Distinction Award for Indoor
Wind Orchestra Music Junior High School Group B. This year, we participated in Chiayi City Music Competition, and our wind orchestra music class, wind orchestra, brass quintet, and woodwind quintet will represent Chiayi City to participate in National Music Competition. Among all the schools in the country, the wind orchestra music promotion in Pei-Shin is highly recognized.
From the process of school curriculum development, it represents the students with leadership, execution, aesthetics, and international prospective that we expect to cultivate. All of the training is to equip students with more competitiveness and surviving capability for the future. We would like to see Pei-Shin students to be diverse, splendid and outstanding in their life stages.
