School History:
Bei-Kang elementary school is located in Xi-Zhi district, New Taipei City with Bei-Kang river flowing through the area. There are 11 classes in this elementary school. Grade 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 are all having two classes in each grade and there is only one class in the 6th Grade. It is a typical kind of rural school. Students at the school are pure, simple and kind. Bei-Kang is in the northern east of Xi-Zhi. The meaning of Bei-Kang in Chinese is the North port. It is originated from being located at the north bank of the Keelung River while Nan-Kang, the South port, is at the south bank of Keelung River. The area around Bei-Kang has lots of hills. It used to produce rice, tea, and coals.
The ancient inhabitants in this area used to be Taiwanese Plains Indigenous Peoples. Some of them were integrated with the Han people who moved to this area and some of them moved out of here, so the tribe disappeared gradually. However, there are still some names of the places came from the pronunciation of Indigenous language, such as Ba-Lian. And Huang-A-Liao, means the barbarian huts, used to be a distained name for the indigenous people called by Han people.
Bei-Kang elementary school was started in April 1921 during the Japanese occupation era. It was launched by the local gentries and was named Bei-Kang public School. The principals were all Japanese at that time. After 1945, Taiwan’s retrocession, our first Taiwanese principal Ho Dong Yuan was in the position for eight years. With the administration of five other principals, the school wsa getting better and better constructed. Especially, during the term of the fourth principal Dong Jin Min, the alumnus raised the donation for buying lands to build the immense playground and started two school branches in Ba-Lian and Hong-Nei.
In 1990s, lots of hillsides were developed in the area, such as the Ray-Shi Villa, Kang-Nong Villa, Lin-Keng Community. The population was growing, and new building of Bei-Kang Elementary School was constructed completely in 1996 to accept more students.
In August 1997, the collapsing of Lin-Ken community caused by the landslide had a big impact on the inhabitants and children at the area. The growing of the school was stopped and because of people are having fewer kids, the number of students was also dropped. We are now having 197 students. The ratio of families with single parents, low income, and disadvantage students are getting higher. Because the family function is not working well, kids are under big challenges physically and mentally. We started to have those educational disadvantage family trend.
The school has started to promote Leader In Me education program in recent years. We want the children’s talent can be seen. When their bright spots can light up themselves and people around them, they become the leaders of their own lives and reach the gifts of freedom. Therefore, Bei-Kang Elementary School was approved as a LIM Lighthouse School. We expect that the LIM can help kids to be able to stand on the stage in order to reach the vision of our school “vitality and spontaneity, joy and interaction, common good new Bei-Kang”:.

School features
According to the new mindset of holistic education, school teachers don’t view collegeism as the only standard, but evaluate students’performance based on their multiple intelligences including the practice of students’ service learning, leadership actions. In the aspect of high efficiency, based on the mindset of holistic education, our school has revised our school-based curriculum. We have put a new interpretation on Beigang’s visions from Vitality, Happiness, New Beigang, to Vitality and Initiativity, Happiness and Interactivity, and Seeking the Common Good in Beigang. At the same time, we have set up the curriculum visions as Good Humanity in Beigang and Sustainability Curriculum with Heart, constructing three goals and five main ideas. They are listed as follows: Creating Happy Life in Beigang, Sustainable and Good Ecology in Beigang, Good Humanity in Beigang loving lives integrating information education. Five main ideas are as follows, the power of health, environment, art, reading and technology.
School feature:
1. Bei-Kang Elementary School was selected as the first Reading Satellite School of Taipei County, previous name of NTC. We constructed the feature and connotation of curriculum based on Reading Education according to the characteristics of the school. We cultivate children in Bei-Kang with the ability of reading and lead them into the wonderland of books so that they will have a chance to turn their life for the better. “Reading Bei-Kang, Campus with stories” started to become the blueprint for us to promote our reading education.
2. Based on the Vision of Bei-Kang and the center of our curriculum developed by all the teachers, we have a WIG, wildly important goal, for the whole school to reach, which are Exercising around the Island, Reading Pyramid, and Smiling Bank. These have become the regular items as the goals for the whole school to achieve.
3. We have a Leadership Day every semester. This is to practice the spirit of Leader in Me. All the activities are planned and implemented by students. Students can be their own leader to organize and prepare for the event, assign their own jobs, decorate the campus, receive the guests, and share their learning result.
4. We have multiple choices of societies. Kids can explore in different field and find their own interest, such as baseball, African drums, dynamic reading, and math.
School facilities:
1. We passed the aesthetic education designing program conducted by Ministry of Education “Design Movement on Campus”. The teaching preparation room embedded in each classroom was transformed into a multiple function room. Some of them become reading corner, some are stages for performance, and some become rooms for board game. The cabinets in the classrooms were designed to be movable in order to increase the storage space. The frame of the blackboards was broken. Kids can draw and write on the whole wall to express their imagination.
2. Children in Bei-Kang Elementary School are sport lovers and the improvement of their healthy is also an important issue concerned by the school. We design a rock-climbing slide which is 8 meters high. Kids cannot only play slides but also do rock-climbing to cultivate different skills of exercise. We provide an alternative way for learning.
