Fengnian Elementary School is a small school in Taitung County. In addition to the standard grades 1 through 6, the school was expanded in 2019 to include two kindergarten classes. Fengnian also has a special education program that opened in 2012, where students of any grade can get the extra help that they need. The school is conveniently located on the outskirts of Taitung City, on Zhongxing Road, with easy access to public transportation. It is close to the Taitung County Council, RT-Mart, and Naruwan Hotel.
The school is located on the land of an early Amis tribe named "Asiroay”. Asiroay means tangerine, as the tribe was named after the many tangerine trees in the area. Fengnian tries to honor its roots, and has published a picture book titled Asiroay. The book is a retelling of an old Asiroay story with beautiful illustrations by Fengnian students. These old indigenous stories carry the culture of the people from which they come. Fengnian’s book, Asiraoy, seeks to show the traditional culture of the Amis, a simple and optimistic matriarchal society. They are known for their pure voices and original dances that flow like the wind.
Nowadays, Fengnian is proud to be a diverse, multi-ethnic school. There are around 80 elementary school students, with an additional 55 students in kindergarden. These students all come from different cultures and backgrounds. In addition to the Amis indigenous people, there are also Bunun, Paiwan, Puyuma, Hakka, Han, and other ethnic groups at Fengnian.
In recent years, residential and commercial infrastructure has increased around the school. A larger population has given rise to more everyday activity and also a stronger local community. The nearby community is closely connected to Fengnian and is just as diverse with people working on farms, at restaurants, or in other service industry positions. Despite the closeness of the community, parents often have to work long hours and cannot always take care of the students after school. As many as 70% of Fengnian’s students need some extra support which is provided in the form of after school programs, and special education teachers. This ensures that all students are given the opportunity to succeed no matter what their background is.
The school was established in 1955 as the Fengnian branch of Kangle Elementary school before eventually splitting into a separate school in 1963. The original school building was built in 1964 and received a subsidy in 2004 for repairs and renovations. The current building of the school was completed and opened in 2007. Including the basement, the new school building has four floors and a variety of facilities and resources for the students to take advantage of. Each class has a dedicated classroom along specialized rooms for all sorts of different subjects. In addition, the school has a large courtyard as an activity spaces for students from which they can see both the Dulan Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
Fengnian used to have a very strong baseball team and fostered many well-known players, such as the Japanese pitcher Guo Yuanzhi. He went on to win the 2006 Xie Guocheng Cup National Little League Championship, and obtained the national representation of the William Porter World Little League. Under the support and assistance of community parents and the guidance of coach Yang Qingwen, the Fengnian elementary baseball team won numerous awards. However, due to the low birth rate and thus fewer students, our baseball team was disbanded in 2013. The baseball field and fence was damaged by Typhoon Nibert and Moranti in 2016, so for safety reasons, it had to be removed. It was replaced by a new track and field which encourages the students to participate in extracurricular sports activities.

Fengnian is located in a growing and diverse community on the outskirts of Taitung City. In this community, however, parents often have to work long hours to make ends meet. Some students only have one parent at home and others are raised by their grandparents. These create challenges for the Fengnian students because they often do not get help or encouragement on their homework from their parents afterschool.
Fengnian has always been committed to helping these students who are falling behind the curriculum. Fengnian offers after school tutoring as well as other clubs to allow students to develop their interests and keep up with their homework. The school tries to give as much learning support as possible to the students that need it.
In recent years, due to the lack of strong family support, teachers found that students were struggling with reading comprehension and also did not have many opportunities outside of school to develop their interests. In response, the school has decided to create a comprehensive integrated supplementary curriculum to complement the standard courses the students take. This new curriculum is called “Fengnian is Fun” and is meant to spark the student’s passion for learning with interesting cross-field integrated courses and projects. This will be a comprehensive plan spanning all of 1st through 6th grade levels.
In the “Fengnian is Fun” curriculum, students will take exploratory science courses, learn scientific fundamentals, integrate new technologies into their learning, and participate in large projects. These activities will help students not only find new passion for the sciences but also allow students to dive deep into topics that interest them. Older students will read popular classic literature as well to supplement their learning. These courses will give students new passions, perspectives, and will also increase their reading comprehension.
Fengnian offers many clubs for students to be exposed to artistic and cultural pursuits. These include a recorder team, a children's band, and a Taiko Drum team. The school believes that giving students opportunities to develop extra-curricular interest will shape the students into well-rounded individuals. These clubs also help to generate more enthusiasm for school which in turn improves the academic performance of the students.
The recorder team has a long history in our school. Primarily comprised of students from grades 4 to 6 they practice hard in music classes and even use holidays and any free time they can get to practice at school. Although the team is relatively small, they won first place in the Taitung County competition in 2010, 2011, and 2020, and represented Taitung County in the national music competition.
The Taiko Drum team is an after-school club for lower grade students. The Taiko Drum practices are invigorating and train the students’ physical strength as well as their concentration. These students also get the opportunity to perform at various events including sports days and community exchange events.
In addition to these clubs, the students at Fengnian are also outstanding artist, and have won many awards in the Taitung County Student Art Exhibition and the National Aboriginal Painting Competition. Students art is prominently displayed around the school and was used as illustrations for the picture book that Fengnian published called Asiraoy.
Fengnian aims to create an environment in which every child can be happy, healty, and friendly as this lends itself to the most productive learning. When faced with novel things or in unclear situations, students are taught to actively explore and learn in order to understand and adapt. Students are always taught to show respect for others. They are shown that through good behavior, practice, and prudent choice, they will be able to achieve a good life.
