Brief History of Hsinchu Cheng De High School
The original predecessor of Hsinchu Cheng De Senior High School was a branch school of a secondary school in Hsinchu. It was founded in 1966 with 8 classes to meet the needs of the division of school districts and the sharply increasing number of students that year. Mr. Zheng Ji-Tang was appointed as the director of the branch school and was responsible for the establishment of the new school. At that time, there was no teaching buildings for the branch school, so the students had to take courses in an elementary school, indoor stadium, or even a Confucian temple nearby.
The next year, the construction work of the new school took place. It was established on a small hill in the western part of Hsinchu. In 1968, the school was formally approved and named as “Hsinchu County Fourth Junior High School,” and Mr. Zheng Ji-Tang was promoted to be the first principal. In August that same year, the government implemented the “9-year compulsory education” and the school was renamed as “Hsinchu County Cheng De Junior High School.” In September, the students were allowed to take courses in the new school area.
With simple and crude equipment and facilities back then, Principal Zheng led all the teachers and students to embellish and beautify the campus, as well as to grow trees and plant grass for the school to create a better environment. Every member of the school worked hard together, toiling and moiling for a better future of the new school, which fully revealed the spirit of teamwork and cooperation.
As the merger of Hsinchu and Xiangshan in 1982, Hsinchu was elevated to a provincial city, and the school name was changed to “Hsinchu Municipal Cheng De Junior High School.” In 1996, after being strictly and thoroughly assessed and evaluated, the school got the approval from the government to upgrade its status to a six-year high school and was renamed again as “Hsinchu Municipal Cheng De High School.” In 1998, the athletic class in the senior high division was founded and the school started to recruit students with talent in different sports such as track and field, boxing, basketball and baseball. In 2001, the school was officially approved again to be renamed as “Hsinchu Cheng De Senior High School.” In 2009, the athletic class for the junior high division was founded, which specialized in baseball training.
After the first principal Zheng Ji-Tang, the following principals Lee Ming-Fei, Chen Chiu-Yen, Wang I-Ping, Tsai Ming-Chuang, Hong Xian-Ming, Tsai Ya-Ya and Huang Xiao-Fang also contributed a lot to the school, devoting themselves to the school administrative affairs as well as improving the software and hardware equipment and facilities.
The current principal of the school is Yang Ching-Shan, who was appointed in August 2019. Principal Yang holds the attitude of servant leadership. “Education is nothing but a concern for love and role model” is Principal Yang’s administrative philosophy and he hopes that every student is nurtured by nature, developing the ability and quality of “taking the initiative, engaging the public, and seeking the common good.” Principal Yang has been devoted to the construction of the school by establishing new teaching buildings and strengthening the connection with the community nearby, hoping to make the school a lifelong learning center in the neighborhood.
