In 1850 (the 30th year of the Qing Dynasty), the Catholic Jesuits founded a new school called Xuhui Public School (College) in Xujiahui, the western suburb of Shanghai, the former residence of the Ming Dynasty's Duke Xu Wending. Although there were only ten graduates in the first class, Mr. Ma Xiangbo was the founder of the future Shanghai AURORA and Fudan Universities, and his brother, Mr. Ma Jianzhong, was the author of the famous book, "Ma's Textbook". In the early days of the university, in response to the trend of the times, emphasis was placed on the study of academic subjects, and French, painting, and music were also taught.
In 1904 (Guangxu 30), English was added to the curriculum, and students were allowed to choose one of the subjects of French and English, and for those who were more advanced, arithmetic, physics, history and geography were added.
In 1932 (R.O.C. 21), the four-year system was changed to three years each for junior and senior high schools, and the name was changed to "St. Ignatius High School".
In 1937 (R.O.C. 26), during the eight-year war of resistance, the school was in the fallen area, but it continued to operate despite all difficulties.
In 1951 (R.O.C. 40), the school administration was changed after the death of the principal, Mr. Zhang Boda, in prison, but fortunately, the name and history of the school still stood.
In April, 1963 (R.O.C. 52), alumnus Zhu Tianjian was recruited as the principal to preside over the restoration of the school, which occupied 3.3785 hectares of land, and was approved by the Department of Education on August 7.
In 1996 (R.O.C. 85), the school was reopened and since then, there have been five principals, including Tianjian Zhu, Guoxi Shan, Bingxin Zhu, Jinzhang Chen, and Jinbo Xia. Each principal has been dedicated to his work and has been working tirelessly to teach from the perspective of "serving the faith and promoting justice" and to create an environment for the school so that every student who enters St. Ignatius High School will experience that his or her personality is respected and that every young student will breathe in an atmosphere of love.
In 2006 (R.O.C. 95), our second principal, Cardinal John Sing, was awarded the National Order of the King Star, First Class, by President Chen Shui-bian in recognition of Cardinal Sing's 60 years of fruitful sacrificial service to the educational and religious communities in Taiwan. Our Principal, Mr. Dai Rongjia, was invited to the Presidential Palace to share the honor and favor of the Cardinal.
In July 2009(R.O.C. 98), the new teaching complex was completed and named the "Ignatius Building" to commemorate the Jesuit ancestor, St. Ignatius, as the leader of Jesuit education and formation. The building, which cost $350 million, includes a first floor and eight floors above ground. From a distance, it looks like an unfolded book, encouraging students to "open the book for good". The main wall is symbolized by the Latin word "IHS", which carries forward the Jesuit educational spirit of "Deliberate Reflection", "Discernment for Change", "Service to the People", and "Promotion of Justice".
In 2016 (R.O.C. 105), the current principal, Hai-Shan Chen, took over as the eighth principal and continues to lead the teachers and students to develop St. Ignatius High School into a school with Jesuit characteristics.
