A. STEAM Course
We combine Life Technology, Natural Science, and the Arts to develop an interdisciplinary course. We guide our students to discover the problems in their daily lives, to apply knowledge and system thinking to come up with the solutions. For instance, our students use Arduino and micro: bit to design the assistive devices for people with disabilities. What’s more, our school is selected as a flagship school of New Taipei City in 2017 and set up a “D. School” for students to think creatively and implement completely.
B. Mobile Learning
Recently, our teachers enthusiastically use different apps to improve or change their way to teach so that students can break the limit of the textbooks and learn consistently through mobile devices.
C. Science Education
In addition to mobile learning, our teachers also try hard to guide students can learn from the theories to the implements and conduct research projects which come from their daily life. Therefore, through the complete lab facilities and solid course teaching, students can devote themselves entirely to their research projects. In 2017, our students won three first place and two second place in different domains in New Taipei City Science Fair and won the third place in the National Science Fair.
D. International Education in Bei Da High School:
Today’s children are facing a highly competitive society. They have to take their roots in the local community and cultivate/expand their international outlook. To help our students equip with sufficient competences, we try our best to design and hold various courses or activities; for instance, “Model United Nations” course and “Exchange Student Program” etc.
i. Courses for International Education
We have several selective courses for students to broaden their global view, such as “Model United Nations” course and “See the World from English Picture Books” course. Through these courses, students can not only understand the current international situations and issues but also cultivate their multiple abilities like analytic and cooperative ability to face the future challenges.
ii. Experiencing Different Cultural Delicacies
In this semester, we held Vietnamese and Spanish Delicacy Experience Activities. Delicacies are the fast and simple way to understand a culture because they imply their weather, geographical environment, and even their history. For example, Spanish omelet, Tortilla de patatas, can tell us that Spanish staple is potato and the eggs were expensive in Spain in the past.
iii. Exchange Student Program
We have exchange students in our school for whole year; for instance, last year we had three students separately from Brazil, Mexico and Finland and this year we have an exchange student from Poland. The exchange students in our school would live and study with our students, which means that they were viewed as normal Taiwanese students in our school. They also needed to attend every activity like morning assembly and inter-class competitions. Besides, our teachers would invite them to share their homeland culture or learning experiences with our students. Our students would invite them to participate in traditional festival such as Chinese New Year and Dragon Boat Festival.
iv. Educational Tour to Japan and Korea
Educational tour is a new, multi-oriented educational method, through which students can expand their visions, make international friends, and learn to respect other cultures. The educational tour provides students with rare opportunities to experience a real school life and to interact with foreign high school students, which cannot be presented in the classroom in Taiwan. Besides, every time when students returned to Taiwan, most of them would realize that English is really an international language because they need to use English to communicate with foreign students. This special experience then became a motivation for students to learn English.
v. Host School for Foreign Schools
Each year, we will receive at least two to three foreign schools. In 2016, we received Tondabayashi High School from Japan and Allerød Gymnasium High School from Denmark. This year, we have just received three Japanese High School, Mejiro Kenshin High School, Tondabayashi High School, and Fuji High School, to visit our school. Before they visited our school, we let our students write the postcards to introduce themselves so that they would feel more familiar with their buddy pupils. When they visited our school, our students would design some activities like jigsaw puzzles of Taiwanese tourist spots and traditional pinball game to introduce Taiwan. These activities were all hosted by our students not teachers because we believed that our students had enough abilities to interact with foreign students.
