From the standpoint of an educator, efforts to improve education should have certain core values, which education is defined by. The foundation for education will be established with these values like tree roots holding itself down from strong winds. Without these values, the educational action will be inconsistent like duckweeds drifting to where the waves take them.
To most people, the meaning of “core values”remains as “knowledge”rather than “deeds”. As a result, the values are not utilized well to their full potential. When in the midst of a dilemma, one may have difficulties making decisions due to the lack of focus on the core values; and this certainly would not resolve the issue.
Under “Singchia’s education”, basically we hope to achieve a learning environment where curriculum directors collaborate to establish a campus culture that centers on these core values. Strategically, curriculum directors can incorporate some of these core values into different courses. In the curriculum, all themed course programs should be designed and implemented with the core values. In mind, every participant of these courses would have the core values related to the problem arose in his mind whenever and wherever he faces the problematic situations in the educational occasions. He would be guided by the core values as a cornerstone to expound and resolve problems. Then the core values would be “strengthened”in the dynamic balance.
During the planning stage, if these core values are incorporated and constantly discussed, repeatedly tested and emphasized in the professional dialogues. They would not only be deeply rooted within the heart, but easily appealed in the lessons. Moreover, even if there are problems and questions, they can always be resolved quickly because of the focus on the core values.
During the implementation stage, lessons that lack the consideration of core values can be reflected, reviewed, and corrected. Through the reflection, the core values of the curriculum will be strengthened to create lesson plans with deeper meanings. If the programs can not be revised to achieve an acceptable result, then new curriculum need to be re-innovated.
At the curriculum evaluation stage, lesson plans should be assessed for its focus and extension of core values. The core values should be reassessed in multi-faceted ways to ensure the focus and extensibility. The focus and extensibility help to confirm and reconfirm whether the core values are logical.
Core values are versatile. For example, the four anchors(四維): propriety(禮), justice(義), integrity(廉), and self-consciousness(恥), the eight virtues: loyalty (忠), filial piety(孝), benevolence(仁), love(愛), faithfulness(信), justice(義), peace(和), and harmony(平), and the three great virtues(三達德) for scouting: wisdom, benevolence, and courage. As well, responsibility, democracy, respect, honor, …etc are also different types of core values. All of those listed above are valued at Singchia elementary school. With these core values as the foundation for our curriculum, the students will surely benefit greatly.
